The virtual world has become an increasing influence in children’s lives, reaching them from more and more directions. Smartphones, social media, gaming and online communication are now deeply woven into children’s lives, bringing new opportunities but also significant risks. As the virtual world continues to expand, there seem to be fewer and fewer ways for parents to keep their children safe from its risks.Yet parents can make a significant difference. Parents can, in a relatively short time, develop a position that can significantly reduce the risks their child faces in the virtual world.Based on the Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) approach developed by Professor Haim Omer, this course explores how parents can develop an active and protective position in their child’s virtual world whilst at the same time reducing conflict.The course explores the major dangers children may encounter online, including harmful and dangerous content, unsafe contacts, online bullying and shaming, pressure to disclose personal information, financial exploitation and scams, phishing and attempts to access passwords or accounts, and exposure to content promoting self-harm or other dangerous activities. It also examines the risks associated with excessive and harmful use of smartphones, gaming and the internet, including withdrawal from family, school and social relationships.Through practical strategies and examples, participants will explore how parents can stay connected to their child’s online world, create an alliance around safety, recognize warning signs and respond effectively when greater protection is needed.Participants will learn to:<ul><li>Understand the major risks children face in the virtual world.</li><li>Help parents develop an active, informed and protective position that reduces these risks.</li><li>Use conversations and a guided tour of the child’s online world to build openness and cooperation.</li><li>Help parents develop joint plans for responding to online dangers.</li><li>Recognise when greater parental involvement or protective action is needed.</li><li>Apply NVR strategies to problematic smartphone, gaming and internet use.</li><li>Help parents develop a supportive network and maintain persistence when difficulties arise.</li></ul>The course is delivered by Professor Haim Omer, founder of the Non-Violent Resistance approach.
